About Me
Lopping back the trees

I really like how shady our yard is, but I'm not so excited about cleaning up everything that drops off the trees. I can't pick the fruit from the very top of the trees, so it rots and falls to the ground, and then it attracts mice and birds unless I clean it up straight away. I'm getting the trees all lopped back so I can get a break from all the cleaning up all this fallen fruit. This blog is all about how to get your backyard fruit trees lopped so that you don't have to clean up as much fallen fruit.

A Beginner's Guide to Woody Weeds Control

Kenneth Kim

Woody weeds refer to hardy plants that are difficult to eliminate once they get into farms and gardens. Unlike ordinary weeds, woody weeds grow as trees, shrubs or vines; hence, they are difficult to remove. Management of such weeds requires special attention since they are hardy plants that might not be eliminated using conventional weed control and management approaches. However, successful removal of woody weeds entails identifying the weed. The next logical step after identification is the application of the correct weed control treatment. This article helps beginners manage woody weeds on their farms and gardens.

Characteristics of Woody Weeds

Normal weeds that affect plant and crop growth are often small and can be eradicated using conventional weed control approaches, such as mulching or herbicides. However, woody weeds are the most rigid types of weeds that a property owner can grapple with. The weeds can be found in both thin-leaved, broad-leaf and needle-leaf plants. Such characteristics of woody weeds make them challenging to eliminate, even with the advancement in weed removal technologies. Therefore, there is no one-size-fits-all method to managing such weeds. The only sure way of removing woody weeds is identifying each type through its visual characteristics based on roots, stems and foliage and then instituting a tailored or integrated approach to weed removal.

Hundreds of Species

Across Australia, hundreds of species of woody weeds continue to devastate farms. Examples of woody weeds include fruit-bearing plants, such as wild strawberries and blackberries, which rid other plants of nutrients. In addition, bamboo, scrub brush and English Ivy can attack gardens and affect other plants. Other examples of woody weeds include poison oak and gum trees, which are hard to remove because their root fragments can quickly develop into mature plants. Therefore, you should consult a local botanist or tree experts to learn more about the woody plant species in your area and how to remove them.

Benefits of Controlling Woody Weeds

Several advantages are associated with controlling woody weeds, including increasing your garden or farm's carrying capacity and maximising your land's value. Other benefits include reducing the risk of wildfires and vermin and minimising stock losses due to poisonous weeds. Moreover, controlling woody weeds help landowners to be compliant with government regulations while protecting the environment from invasive species.

Controlling Woody Weeds

The weed control method you adopt depends on the type of woody weed targeted. In most weeds, herbicides yield better results when combined with other weed management techniques in an integrated weed control approach. For example, herbicides can be combined with methods such as pasture improvement, livestock, cultivation and slashing. Most importantly, always seek expert guidance before choosing a woody weed control program.
